The beginning of this year marked Medspray’s 20th anniversary!
Twenty years ago, we were experimenting with filtrating liquids when we discovered that we could create an ultrafine monodisperse spray, using a micro sieve. What started with experiments trying to filter milk, beer, blood, and water (yes, really), ended up being our proudest invention. But what to do with it?
After the first few years of looking for the right application, including spray drying powders, Formula 1 fuel injection, and many more wild ideas, we decided it was most valuable in medical inhalers. That’s why we named the company Medspray (short for Medical Spray). Our first company car was decorated with our logo and the text: ‘drug delivery’. In hindsight, not the best idea when going on cross-border trips…
These first years of Medspray were characterized by a small team of two (and later six) people, who were mostly experimenting and trying to spray anything and everything. We once tried spraying oil, which resulted in a slippery office floor for the rest of the week.
We started at a small room at the University of Twente, but Medspray’s growth meant we had to relocate to fit all of our employees. All the while, our Spray Nozzle Unit (SNU) got smaller and smaller as our technology advanced. We also got ISO 13485-certified, started our own aerosol lab, and created a clean room for the assembly of our SNU’s.
Even though Medspray is a ‘medical’ company, interested parties from various branches often reached out to us. That’s why we spent the following years reinventing our technology and basically started over. We prepared for mass production by making the spray nozzle chip even smaller and redesigning the SNU. As a result, we were able to apply our invention to different products, like perfumes and air fresheners as well.
The magic of the spray cloud has remained. Every new customer is surprised by the simplicity of our high-tech solution, when they first see it in action.
The market will require us to keep expanding our horizons. Can we make our sprays even finer? Can we raise flow levels? Is it possible to produce even smaller SNU’s? Or are there exotic fluids we can try to spray with our technology? With every answer we come up with, we build on our unique formula.
Looking to the future, we see a role cut out for Medspray in bringing accessible medical treatments to developing countries. We want to improve our minuscule drops of perfume for both humans and nature. Our technology will make propellants redundant. We’d like to help intensivists worldwide to offer patients Medspray Technology for optimal care. Our nose spray vaccination will make children lose all fears of going to the doctor. If literally everything falls into place, we might just moisten our eyes while watching a Formula 1 car win the World Championship with our Medspray petrol injection nozzle!
